Western Art
McCaughen & Burr’s long history with Western art dates to the founding of the gallery in 1840, when it supplied materials to artists eager to depict the American West, including Karl Bodmer, George Catlin, and Albert Bierstadt. The gallery later sold the works these artists brought back from their explorations.
Today, the gallery continues to offer works by artists associated with the early twentieth-century Taos School, including Oscar E. Berninghaus, E. Irving Couse, and Joseph Henry Sharp. In addition to these now-historical Western artists, McCaughen & Burr also presents works by leading contemporary painters of the West, including Jason Rich, Kurt Walters, and Jean Harvey.
