Laurence Sisson

BIOGRAPHY

b. 1928, Boston, MA
d. 2015, Cushing, ME

Laurence Sisson was an American painter known for his seascapes of the Maine coast and landscapes of the American Southwest. He studied at the Worcester Art Museum School and at Yale University. In 1955, he became Director of the Portland School of Fine and Applied Art in Portland, Maine, and later served as artist-in-residence at the Publick House in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.

Working in both watercolor and oil, Sisson’s style ranged from plein-air observation to highly expressive and imaginative compositions. His paintings often incorporate abstract and surrealist elements, reflecting his belief in “designing by nature.” Critics have also noted the influence of traditional Asian landscape painting in his work.

Sisson was known for his use of unusual color combinations and distinctive brushwork. Rather than creating literal representations of observed scenes, he drew from memory, experience, and interpretation, resulting in landscapes that blend realism with abstraction and surrealism.
