Curt Walters

BIOGRAPHY

b. 1950, Las Cruces, NM

Curt Walters is an Arizona artist known for his plein-air Impressionist depictions of the Grand Canyon. While much of his work focuses on the American Southwest, Walters has also painted landscapes and cityscapes throughout the United States and abroad.

Walters developed an early passion for art, selling his first painting at the age of fifteen. At nineteen, he visited the Grand Canyon for the first time, beginning a lifelong artistic connection to the landscape that would come to define much of his career.

Beyond painting the canyon, Walters became deeply involved in its preservation. In the early 1990s, growing air pollution over the canyon inspired him to support the work of the Grand Canyon Trust through fundraising and donated paintings. In recognition of his efforts, he was named the organization’s Official Artist. He also worked with the Grand Canyon Conservancy, supporting efforts to preserve the canyon’s wildlife, historic structures, and artistic legacy.

Walters has traveled extensively, painting throughout the American West as well as locations including Bali, Venice, Normandy, Prague, Budapest, and Jordan. His work is included in numerous private and institutional collections, and he regularly exhibited at the Prix de West Exhibition in Oklahoma City and the Masters of the American West exhibition at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles.

Among his many honors are five medals from these exhibitions, including the prestigious Frederic Remington Painting Award in 2004.
