BIOGRAPHY

b. 1909, St. Louis, MO
d. 1963, Morristown, NJ

Joe Jones (1909–1963) was an American painter and muralist whose work was shaped by the social and artistic climate of the 1930s. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, and largely self-taught, he gained early recognition for paintings that explored both the realities of working-class life and the landscapes of the Midwest.

Following his first New York exhibition in 1935, Jones received national attention and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1937. His career included important mural commissions during the New Deal era, and his work later developed toward a more simplified and increasingly abstract style. Today, his paintings are represented in major American museum collections.
