Washington University School of Art & Group 15
McCaughen & Burr has a particularly rich history of representing artists connected to the Washington University School of Art during the mid-twentieth century. Influenced by figures such as Max Beckmann, Philip Guston, and Werner Drewes, these artists produced some of the most accomplished explorations of abstraction and surrealism in the region.
Many—including Fred Conway, Siegfried Reinhardt, Alvin Metelman, and Edward Boccia—strengthened their national reputations by exhibiting together at the Saint Louis Art Museum as “Group 15.” The group extended beyond the Washington University School of Art and included other leading artists such as Jessie Beard Rickly and Aimee Schweig.
